IC is a key component of a printed circuit board, how to determine whether it is new or used?

1. Check the part body table

If a used part has been polished, it can be viewed under a magnifying glass and there will be tiny scratches on the surface. If the surface is painted, it will look bright without the plastic texture.

2. Check the printed text

High-quality producers use laser printers to print text. It has a clear, unobtrusive appearance and is difficult to erase. Often, the text on refurbished chips is blurred and not as legible. You may find that the edges are blurry. Even characters may be offset, and shading and colors may be uneven. Also, many refurbished chips are reprinted using a stencil, in which case it is easy to tell if it is new or refurbished.

3. Check component pins

If component leads have the sheen of a thin coating, they can be refurbished. The original components are tin-plated, the color is deep and uniform, and it will not oxidize when scratched.

4. Check the date code

Production codes should be specific to a particular lot and should include the time of production. If refurbished, the new date label may be unclear or inconsistent.

5. Compare the thickness of the component body

Used parts are deeply polished to remove old markings to make them look newer.

Therefore, the thickness will be significantly smaller than normal. If you want to use a caliper to compare their thickness, you need to have a lot of experience. But it might be more obvious if you inspect the shape. Since the plastic case unit is injection molded, the unit edges are rounded. But you can tell by over-grinding for refurbishment that reduces the plastic body to a rectangular shape with sharp edges.
